Excavated in India before 1668 and cut several times between 1668 and 1958, the 45.52 carat, deep-blue diamond known as the Hope Diamond is the world’s largest-known and most famous blue diamond. After a tumultuous history, the diamond was donated to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in 1958 by New York diamond merchant Harry Winston.
