Fashion Dolls 101

A recent business presentation brought me to the Embassey Suites Hotel in the Cool Springs area of Nashville/ Franklin. After the exciting RF business opportunity meeting led by several local million-dollar earners,  (which was somewhat interrupted by loud music from the meeting in the room next door),  I was too wound up to simply drive home, so I unwound by exploring the lobby area. There I came across a display of the award-winning Luciana doll from American Girl. The display included the book that accompanies the doll about Luciana as well as a small but colorful poster advertising American Girl birthday parties at the Embassy Suites hotel. Photo of Belle Meade Mansion (c) Kathryn Darden Belle Meade Plantation , located in Nashville's prestigious Belle Meade community, is a historic mansion whose grounds and buildings now serve as a museum.  Although visitors usually go to enjoy the grounds, historic outbuildings and the mansion, there is also a gift shop on the grounds full of Civil War and Southern gifts, including some cute dolls and stuffed animals. Photos of dolls (c) Kathryn Darden Beautiful dolls in Southern style dress join Raggedy Ann and some home-spun dolls in pretty array.  Not to be outdone are plush ponies, puppies, bunnies and other stuffed animals for sale at Belle Meade Mansion. Built in the 1820s by  John Harding , the mansion is worth a visit to enjoy some of the history of Nashville and the South, but doll collectors will also enjoy shopping in the gift store for the cute offerings found there.   University Cheerleaders dolls by Best Pals, 2002 with UT Vols doll In 1996, Mattel came out with a line of college cheerleader Barbie dolls with uniforms that matched their real-life counterparts. Six years later, Best Pals, Inc. issues their own line of somewhat smaller cheerleader dolls wearing licensed "Real Authentic Gear" from seven U.S. universities including  Tennessee's own UT Vols cheerleader. Indian dolls at 31st Annual Native American Indian Association Pow Wow  Every October American Indians from around the Nation gather in Tennessee to share part of their culture and crafts. This year's Native American Indian Association Pow Wow and Fall Festival took place on Oct. 19 and 20 at Long Hunter State Park. Plantation Belles past club dolls Belle Meade Plantation Belles Barbie Doll Club celebrates 15th anniversary Founded in 1997, the Belle Meade Plantation Belles Barbie Doll Club and their guests celebrated the doll collectors club 15th anniversary on September 6 at Shoney's in Bellevue. Belle Meade Plantation Belles Barbie Doll Club to celebrate 15 years The Belle Meade Plantation Belles Barbie Doll Club was founded in September 1997. This month the club celebrates its 15th anniversary with a special meeting on Thursday, September 6 at 7 p.m. at Shoneys in Bellevue. Members received special club dolls for 2012 at their January meeting , but more goodies will be on hand at the September meeting. Jem's Samantha Newark & Patricia Alice Albrecht at Anime Convention Two Nashvillw television, music, and voice over celebrities are among the list of special guests who will be on hand for the MTAC OMEGA convention on April 6-8, 2012 at the Nashville Convention Center and Renaissance Nashville Hotel in Nashville, TN. Jem & The Holograms: Hasbro doll line & TV series Jem and the Holograms is a colorful line of rock 'n roll dolls which began production in 1985 and which spawned a television cartoon series that ran from 1985 to 1988. The animated "Jem and the Holograms" television show, which was based on the doll characters and follows the adventures of Jem and her rival Pizzazz (Nashville's Patricia Alice Albrecht), is still in syndication today.

Plantation Belles Doll Club to celebrate Cinco de Mayo The Belle Meade Plantation Belles Doll Club is celebrating Cinco de Mayo tonight at 7 PM at Shoneys in Bellevue. The doll club I co-founded in 1996 was invited to a special luncheon before the open house.  Gallery showing of dolls in East Nashville combines fashion with history The Gallery Showing of Rare Prototype Dolls on April 2, hosted by Joan Greene and Cathy Hardaway, drew visitors from all over Middle Tennessee to East Nashville, including several local doll clubs including the Belle Meade Plantation Belles Doll Club , the Music City Doll Club and the Tennessee Internet Pink Society (TIPS) Barbie Doll Club . A showing of prototype dolls like this is an unusual event, and local doll collectors and fashion buffs have the opportunity to see something a little out of the ordinary when Gene's developer Joan Greene and her friend Cathy Hardaway open the historic Hardaway House to visitors on April 2.
