1976 Avon Betsy Ross Sonnet Cologne Figurine: A Bicentennial Collectible



One of the figures I have had on display this year as part of the semiquincentennial celebration is this historic Betsy Ross figurine from Avon  Fifty years after she was released in 1976, she has been a part of my America250 celebration all summer  

The 1976 Avon Betsy Ross Sonnet cologne figurine remains one of the most recognizable patriotic collectibles from America’s Bicentennial celebration. Issued by Avon to mark the 200th anniversary of the United States, this charming figural bottle combines vintage perfume history with classic Americana design and continues to appeal to collectors of both Avon bottles and Bicentennial memorabilia.




Design and Details of the Figurine

The bottle depicts Betsy Ross in colonial attire, typically shown with the early American flag. Many versions feature the flag draped across her skirt or lap, highlighting the traditional story of her sewing the first Stars and Stripes. Standing about 5.5 inches tall, the piece held 4 fluid ounces of Avon’s Sonnet cologne. The base is often molded with the date “July 4, 1976,” clearly tying it to the Bicentennial year. Original labels identifying it as the Betsy Ross Figurine Sonnet Cologne are still found on many surviving examples.

Deb’s Fantastical Frames

 Deb’s Fantastical Frames had a display set up at the 10th Annual Handmade Nashville Holiday Market craft fair in Bellevue, TN today. Unfortunately, a storm was rolling in and people were packing up early.  I caught Deb on her way to her vehicle and snapped three photos to share of the beautiful 3-D fairy displays she makes from frames and boxes. Each mixed-media display is complete, but if you know me, you know I love the Barbie micro minis and the “You Can Be Anything” Barbie minis, so I was just itching to drop a couple of minis in each display for fun. Note to self:  keep a Barbie mini on hand at all times for moments like these.  “ I just feel like my frames are a window into a magical fairy world where each frame tells a story of its own,” Deb says about her creative work.  Frames average   $125 for an ornate or large frame and $85 for ones like the little boy fishing.
