In December of 1954, Disney aired the first of five episodes of their Davy Crockett miniseries on ABC starring Fess Parker as Crockett and Buddy Ebsen as his friend George Russel. That first episode was "Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter" and it gave birth to "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" and an obsession with coon skin caps. Forty years later, Mattel produced a Davy Crockett doll to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Davy Crockett television series in 1994.

New Barbie Dreamhouse Experience opens in Berlin; protesters tackle toy

 The opening of the the Barbie Dreamhouse Experience near Alexanderplatz square in Berlin, Germany, was marred by a crowd of feminists with nothing better to do than protest an 11 inch plastic child's toy on May 16, 2013. Earlier this month, the first Barbie Dreamhouse Experience opened in South Florida.

In honor of Mother's Day, this article will look at Barbie's origins and family. The Barbie doll was designed by Ruth Handler of Mattel based upon her daughter's paper dolls and the German Bild Lilly doll of the 1960s, so in many ways Ruth Handler is the mother of the Barbie doll.
